Job Summary
The Electrical Reliability Specialist supports long-term reliability improvement efforts for electrical equipment, including 138kV SF6 breakers, GIS switchgear, large synchronous motors, MV switchgear and breakers, oil-filled transformers, protective relays, H/M/L voltage cables, UPS and DC systems, bus duct (non-seg and Iso phase), and HV switch yards.
This role focuses on improving asset reliability by leveraging equipment condition monitoring, implementing robust asset strategies, and supporting defect elimination efforts.
Hence, key responsibilities include enhancing the early detection of equipment degradation through improved condition monitoring programs, preventing failures through optimized asset strategies, and eliminating chronic/high-cost equipment failures by determining and addressing their root causes.
Success in this role requires building cross-functional alignment to ensure shared understanding, commitment, and support for reliability-focused initiatives.
Additionally, the Electrical Reliability Specialist serves as a champion for reliability best practices and actively mentors others to build a proactive, reliability-centered culture across the organization.
Location/Travel Information
This position will be based at the Freeport LNG Liquification Facility (Quintana, TX) or Pre-Treatment Facility (Freeport, TX). This position requires the incumbent to hold a valid drivers license. Expected out-of-town travel is less than 10%.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Complies with and enforces safety rules and expectations
- Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company requirements
- Conducts condition monitoring on electrical equipment and analyzes results to detect potential issues
- Develops, implements, and continuously improves condition monitoring programs (PD monitoring, oil analysis, infrared thermography, corona detection, EMI monitoring, etc.)
- Utilizes KPIs to report on the health and effectiveness of reliability and condition monitoring programs
- Optimizes predictive and preventive maintenance tasks through insights gained from condition monitoring and equipment failures
- Supports work to implement/build-out effective asset performance management (APM) systems
- Utilizes APM systems to optimize asset strategies, monitor asset health, and ensure timely response to alerts and anomalies
- Supports troubleshooting and root cause analysis of equipment problems
- Leverages lessons learned from equipment failures to proactively mitigate risk across similar equipment
- Ensures proposed solutions address the causes of equipment failures
- Utilizes and enhances third-party remote monitoring and health services and ensures anomalies reported by these services are resolved with appropriate urgency
- Identifies and addresses spare parts gaps for critical equipment
- Supports the execution of strategic initiatives and capital projects to improve equipment reliability
- Demonstrates and champions mindsets and behaviors that unpin a strong reliability culture
- Maintains close coordination with the Facilities Engineering and Maintenance teams to ensure alignment on critical reliability issues and their resolution
Education, Experience, Certification, and Technical Skills Requirements
- Experience and Education: Minimum of 10 years of in-plant industrial electrical experience and High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Preferred Education: Associate degree (2-year) in electrical technology or a related field
- Preferred Certifications:
- NETA Level III certification required, Level IV preferred
- Infrared Institute Level II certification required, Level III preferred
- Technical Skills and Competencies:
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply single-line diagrams and electrical schematics
- Proficient in the use of electrical diagnostic and test equipment, including multimeters, insulation resistance testers (megger), infrared cameras, and corona cameras
- Skilled in electrical maintenance, repair, and installation activities
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve electrical system issues across a range of voltage classes.
- Codes, Standards, and Best Practices: Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards, including:
- NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code – NEC)
- NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace)
- NFPA 70B (Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance)
- NETA Maintenance Testing Specifications (NETA MTS)
- Electrical IT Systems: Skilled in the use of discipline-specific electrical IT systems, including:
- SEL Power Monitoring and Control System (PMCS)
- IRIS Partial Discharge (PD) system
- Power DB
